Dr. Hirsch writes about the Dinner and the Visiting Scholar Dialogue the following evening, "I have heard nothing but compliments about the dinner. Fr. Pawlikowski, back for the second year in a row, was outstanding and delivered a brilliant and moving address at Temple Shalom on the Wednesday evening following the dinner. The evening was co-sponsored by our friends at The Greenberg Center for Learning and Tolerance and Temple Shalom. Mel Glazer graciously chaired the meeting which was very well attended. Fr. Pawlikowski, normally the essence of calm and composure, was really surprised and grateful to receive the Dove of Peace Award. 2006, continued                Return to top

  • The CCJD, in cooperation with The Greenberg Center for Tolerance, The Colorado College and Temple Shalom, hosted its 2006 Fall Lecture with Michael Brooks, Executive Director of The Hillel Foundation at The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

The event took place on Tuesday, October 17, at Temple Shalom, 1523 East Monument Street, Colorado Springs, Colo.

Dr. Brooks addressed the topic of “Judaism And Christianity: What Our Differences Might Teach Us About Our Relationship and Why the Wisdom of Both Traditions Is Needed for the World to Work.”

It is often said that great minds think alike, but that is seldom the case. Small minds more often think alike; great minds usually think differently. While the unspoken assumption of interfaith dialogue is often that the engagement will help us appreciate how much we have in common, it is equally possible that our profound differences in experience, worldview and values may bring Christians and Jews to an even greater appreciation of why the wisdom of both of our faith traditions is needed for the world to work.

  • The Summer CCJD Board of Directors/Advisors Meeting was held on Thursday, July 6.

  • Rev. Leanne Hadley, president of First Steps Spirituality Center and a member of the CCJD Board of Directors, presented our Spring Lecture on Sunday, June 25. Rev. Hadley spoke on "The Raising of Children in the Jewish and Christian Traditions," an area in which her expertise is nationally recognized.

  • Dr. Hirsch lectured on Sundays in June at First United Methodist Church and in July at St. Paul's United Methodist (both in Colorado Springs), bringing the CCJD message within the context of scriptural study.

  • On May 15, Vanguard Church hosted a community discussion on "Religious Tensions: Muslims, Jews, and Christians." This dynamic night of conversation and learning focused on "The Role of Religion in Shaping Politics and Morality" and "How Does One Attain Eternal Life?"  Panel members included:
    • From the Muslim Community:  Abdel Azim M. Elsiddig and Arshad Yousufi

    • From the Jewish Community:  Rabbi Anat Moskovitz and Rabbi Howard Abel Hirsch

    • From the Christian Community:  Bishop Richard Hanifen and Carl Medearis
  • The Spring CCJD Board of Directors/Advisors Meeting was held on Thursday, April 27, at First Baptist Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

  • Dr. Hirsch lectured on Sundays through April and May at First Lutheran Church, bringing the CCJD message within the context of scriptural study. He also lectured on April 9 at First Baptist Church and celebrated the Passover Seder with Bishop Michael J. Sheridan and the Catholic Diocesan staff on April 10. (All churches mentioned are in Colorado Springs, Colorado.)

  • On February 15, Rabbi Hirsch spoke at Central United Methodist Church, Colorado Springs, at the invitation of The Rev. Judy Owsley. His topic was "The Jewish Jesus."

  • At the invitation of Pastor Ted Haggard, Rabbi Howard Abel Hirsch participated in a public forum on Jewish-Christian relationships and the State of Israel at New Life Church on January 29, 2006. Also participating with Pastor Haggard and Rabbi Hirsch were Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, Founder and Chairman of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews (www.ifcj.org) and Mr. Butch Maltby, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Fellowship. The event, attended by 5,000 people, was covered on television and in the press. New Life Church is the largest church in Colorado, with 14,000 members. Visit New Life's web site at www.newlifechurch.org.

2005                                 Return to top

  • At year-end 2005, Rabbi Hirsch taught for six weeks at Benet Hill Monastery, a Benedictine community of Roman Catholic nuns in Colorado Springs. His lecture topics were the biblical books of Esther and Ruth.

  • In 2005, the first Hanukkah candle was lit just as Christmas Day ended, the calendar's subtle way of telling us how both festivals attempt to bring light and peace into a dark world. CCJD Founding President Rabbi Howard Abel Hirsch hosted radio station KCME's annual observance of Hanukkah, a Jewish holiday about the meaning of religious freedom. The program, a closer look at the joy of Hanukkah through word and music, aired on Monday, December 26, at 8:00 p.m. on KCME, 88.7 FM (www.KCME.org).

  • We sponsored the fourth session of "Judaism and Christianity: Siblings in Faith," a public dialogue with Bishop Richard C. Hanifen and Rabbi Howard Abel Hirsch, Tuesday, November 1, 2005, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 1601 Mesa Avenue, Colorado Springs.

We affirm the words of Hayim Goren Perelmuter, when he notes that as Jews and Christians, we can know each other and ourselves "better and more deeply 'when we use the sources' of the other to help us along to a better understanding. What a development in the destiny of siblings separated by bitter, implacable civil strife, with enmity festering for millenia, to discover how 'we' are indeed joined at the hip, turning to the basic texts of the 'other' to achieve a better understanding of 'ourselves.'" (Excerpted from Perelmuter's article "Jesus the Jew: A Jewish Perspective." Perelmuter is Professor of Jewish Studies at Catholic Theological Union at Chicago, and Rabbi Emeritus of KAM Isaiah Israel Congregation.)

  • Bruce Feiler, the acclaimed best-selling author of Abraham and Walking the Bible, returned to Colorado Springs on Thursday, October 27, 2005, to speak about and autograph copies of his new book, Where God Was Born.

At a time when America debates its values and the world braces for religious war, Feiler, who traveled 10,000 miles in the Middle East, Iran, Iraq and Israel, examines the question, "Is religion just a source of conflict, or can it be a source of peace?" Part wartime chronicle, part archaeological detective story, part personal spiritual exploration, Where God Was Born takes readers to biblical sites not seen by Westerners for decades and uncovers little-known details about the common roots of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

  • We sponsored the third session of "Judaism and Christianity: Siblings in Faith," a public dialogue with Bishop Richard C. Hanifen and Rabbi Howard Abel Hirsch, on Sunday, October 23, 2005, at First Lutheran Church, 1515 N. Cascade, Colorado Springs.

Our Eighth Annual Dinner and Dialogue took place on Thursday, October 20, 2005, at the Doubletree Hotel World Arena, 1775 E. Cheyenne Mountain Boulevard, Colorado Springs, Colo.

During the dinner, the Dove of Peace Award was presented to The Catholic Diocese of Colorado Springs, in recognition of its significant contributions to dialogue between Christians and Jews along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Bishop Michael J. Sheridan accepted the award on behalf of the diocese.

Dialogue panelists included Fr. Andrew Ciferni, O. Praem., Daylesford Abbey, Paoli, PA; Bishop Allen C. Bjornberg of the Rocky Mountain Synod Evangelical Lutheran Church in America; and Rabbi Howard Abel Hirsch, Founding President of the CCJD and Affiliate Faculty at Regis University. The dialogue was moderated by L. Martin Nussbaum. Rev. Jim Singleton, Senior Minister at First Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs presented the opening prayer.

  • Our Fall Lecture, featuring Fr. Andrew Ciferni, O. Praem., Daylesford Abbey, Paoli, PA, took place at Temple Shalom, 1523 E. Monument Street, Colorado Springs, Colo., on Wednesday, October 19, 2005. Fr. Ciferni spoke on the topic of "Praying with the Church and the Synagogue."

  • On Sunday, October 9, 2005, Dr. Hirsch spoke at New Life Church about the CCJD. New Life, the largest church in Colorado at 11,000 members, has been one of the principal supporters of our organization since its inception in 1995.

  • We sponsored the second session of "Judaism and Christianity: Siblings in Faith," a public dialogue with Bishop Richard C. Hanifen and Rabbi Howard Abel Hirsch, on September 28, 2005, at Regis University in Denver. Here's what Dr. Hirsch said about the event: "Bishop Hanifen and I had a phenomenal time as we dialogued with two gatherings at Regis University's main campus in Denver. More than 100 people attended, several of whom are Regis students who plan to attend our dinner on October 20."

  • Our fall Board of Directors/Advisors Meeting took place on September 19, 2005, at St. Joseph Catholic Church - Southgate in Colorado Springs. Thank you to Fr. Jay Jensen for hosting this meeting. The fruits of this meeting may be seen on our Home page: our revised Mission Statement, Vision Statement, and Scriptural Foundation Statement.

  • We sponsored the first session of "Judaism and Christianity: Siblings in Faith," a public dialogue with Bishop Richard C. Hanifen and Rabbi Howard Abel Hirsch, on September 14, 2005, at St. Mary's Cathedral in Colorado Springs.

  • Our 2005 Spring Dialogue, held on June 12 at First Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs, Colo., featured guest speaker Dr. Joseph W. Pickle, Jr., Professor Emeritus of Religion at Colorado College in Colorado Springs. The topic of the dialogue was "Denominations and their Impact on Dialogue," addressing in particular the question: Why are there so many distinct Christian and Jewish communities, and what difference does that make in Christian-Jewish Dialogue?

  • Our Spring 2005 Board of Directors/Advisors Meeting took place on May 12. A very intense and thought-provoking discussion took place as we reviewed the past decade and looked forward to the next. It is fitting that we reexamine everything that we have been able to achieve together during these intervening ten years and make plans for the next ten. All organizations participate in a similar process of soul-searching, and we, of course, are no exception.
