Elbert County Women Honored by Center for Christian-Jewish Dialogue

By Paige Evans

Over six hundred guests packed the Doubletree ballroom in Colorado Springs last Thursday, October 19th, for the Ninth Annual Dinner and Dialogue where Elbert County ’s own Roxann Maul Johnson and Paige Evans were presented with the C. Gary Mammel Memorial trophy.  This coveted award is given every other year but only if a deserving recipient is found.  Johnson and Evans were unanimously nominated by board members of The Center for Christian-Jewish Dialogue for their work on a DVD which tells the organization’s story.

Rabbi Howard Abel Hirsch founded the center in 1995 “…to affirm what Christians and Jews hold in common, engage in conversation and promote understanding and encourage mutual respect for each other’s faith, culture and history.”

Johnson’s rigorous role as project producer was in addition to her status as a full-time student at Regis University where Rabbi Hirsch teaches Old Testament Themes.  Johnson was a student in his class.  In learning more about the CCJD, she discovered their need for a video to help promote their organization.  Johnson recruited her friend, Paige Evans of WOW productions, to help convert the need into a reality.

Coming from a background in radio, broadcast television, and motion pictures, Evans loves to tell stories and found the Rabbi had a good one.  As a producer for Americas Most Wanted, looking for clues to build an exciting show was always part of her job.  Evans worked the creative side, while Johnson made arrangements with the many people who helped tell the tale.  The collaboration was a great success.

Soon after the DVD was completed, Johnson graduated Suma cum laude from Regis and this summer took Magna cum laude honors from nursing school.  For those who may not know, “Roxie” Johnson is descended from the Elbert County pioneering family which established the Maul Ranch in the 1800s and for whom Maul Road is named.

Along with running WOW Productions, which by the way is MOM spelled up-side-down, Paige Evans is a Longhorn cattle rancher, ten minutes south east of Kiowa.
