By David Duchen Two areas I typically avoid covering in the column are politics and religion, but The Center for Christian-Jewish Dialogue's annual Dove of Peace Award just made such sense, especially in lieu of today's worldwide conflict. How wonderful to designate night to honor peace, love, and understanding (isn't that the title of a Beatles song?). On October 19, a warm crowd of 440 attendees gathered at the Doubletree Hotel World Arena to honor and celebrate interfaith communication and respect during the ninth annual CCJD's dinner and dialogue. Three panelists, a minister, priest, and rabbi, each retired military chaplains and each good friends, headlined the evening's dialogue event with an energetic discussion on interfaith relations in the military. "I wish every city offered this kind of event," said Captain Charles Marvin, executive director for the National Association of Evangelical Chaplains Commission and one of the panelists. Dove of Peace Awardees are L. Martin Nussbaum, co-chair of Rothgerber Johnson & Lyons LLP Religious Institutions Group and general counsel for more than 40 churches and denominations; and A. Marvin Strait, former president of the Colorado Society of Certified Public Accountants. The C. Gary Mammel Award is named for one of the founders of the CCJD. It is presented to individuals who have facilitated greater understanding of interfaith relationships among members of both traditions. The 2006 recipients are Paige Evans and Roxann Johnson. The CCJD was founded in 1995 to "affirm what Christians and Jews hold in common, engage in conversation, promote understanding, and encourage mutual respect." Special thanks to presenting sponsor American National Bank. Dialogue and Dinner Committee members included: Beth Byer, chair; Pam Bruni; Deborah Menno Duchen; Robert Fineberg; Linda Flynn; Rabbi Howard Hirsch: Ellen Jeffers; Judy Kaiser; Mary Ellen McNally: Leslie Nathan; Kappy Stewart: Charles Sullivan; Janet Suthers; Don Thomas: Alison Walls; Carol Weissler; and Elizabeth Youngquist.
